In a war of attrition, it's usually the deeper team that prevails. Such was the case in Thursday's 4A state girls soccer tournament quarterfinal battle between Lehi and Snow Canyon, in which the Pioneers were victorious, 1-0.

Both teams had chances to put the ball in the net, though the Lehi offense was clearly in control for the majority of the game.

That fact was never more evident than in a three-minute stretch in the second half when the Pioneers took two corner kicks, a direct kick off of a penalty and seven individual shots. The final shot, by junior Mikaela Kauffman, was deflected wide by Snow Canyon keeper Kylie Moore. While players were scrambling for control of the ball, Moore tried clearing the ball out of the box but ended up kicking the ball into one of her own defenders and back into the Warriors' goal to put Lehi up 1-0.

The goal was credited to Kauffman, though the whole Lehi team should be given props for upping the level of intensity which led to the only goal of the game.

Snow Canyon battled all game and made defensive stand after defensive stand to hold Lehi to one goal, especially considering the Pioneers took 26 shots. There were 16 of them in the second half.

Tori Bergen led the defensive lockdown for Snow Canyon, who only had eight shots on goal.

The first half was especially brutal for the Warrior defenders. Lehi kept the ball on Snow Canyon's side of the field for the overwhelming majority of the half, which took its offense completely out of the game.

Kyleigh Royall, Tasha Price and Harley Spier put constant pressure on the Snow Canyon defenders with great passing and spacing. The Pioneers took shots when they presented themselves and found open teammates when holes closed.

"Today's win shows what a mentally strong group we have," Pioneer coach Brett Bergholm said. "It was a mental battle all game and we proved how good we were."

Up next for the Pioneers is a matchup with Bonneville, a 2-1 winner over East on Thursday, in the state semifinals. The game will be on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. at Juan Diego High School.

When asked about his team moving forward in this tournament, Bergholm said, "Every team left in this thing is incredible and they deserve to be here. We've been winning games though when we're not playing our best. And that gives us confidence."
