MT. PLEASANT-- The Lady Hawks volleyball season has been underway for a coupleweeks and if the team keeps up what they have shown so far, it looks to be a promising season for the Lady Hawks.
As Coach Rickie Stewart starts her second year at the realm as head coach, she must be feeling hopeful with a team of eight returning seniors."We have great leaders and I wouldn't trade our team for anything. They are the best group of kids I have ever seen or coached. They have an amazing willingness to do what it takes to be successful," said Coach Stewart.
The Lady Hawks are a strong hitting team with Shelby Earl and Shyanne Ison at the outside hitting positions, with Lindsay Bradley and Laurel Bailey in the middle and opposite positions.
Kara Anderson will be running the floor for her hitters as setter, with Brooke Seely, Mckelle Anderson and Taleena Holgreen as well as Ison and Earl passingin the back court, as well as getting done from the service line. Their quickness in defense makes them a strong force to be reckoned with.
The Hawks placed second and third respectively at two different pre-season tournaments held in Provo recently where they faced off with bigger 4 and 5A schools.
Thee team recently took on former region rival Carbon Dinos in Price, Sept. 1.The Hawks dropped game one, 25-20, to the Dinos, but came out of the huddle in game two on fire and never looked back, beating Carbon the next three games, 25-10, 25-17, 25-15.Ison led the Hawks in the victory with 23 kills and four solo blocks.
The Lady Hawks then had a small break before hosting the Wasatch Wasps at the home opener. The first game against Wasatch started with a quick kill by Ison and then a couple from Bradley to get the momentum going, and before they knew it, the wasps were trailing 14-6 at the first time-out.The Hawks won game 1 with a score of 25-16.
Game two would prove to be all the Lady Hawks as well, with kills coming from Bradley and Ison to get it started again, they pushed forward.Back-to-back kills from Earl put the Hawks up by five, forcing another Wasatch time-out trailing 23-18.
Another kill from Ison and an ace serve from Mckelle Anderson gave the Hawks game, 25-18.Game two started pretty much like one and two with Ison and Bradley kills at the front line.
Bradley had a couple of blocks and a tip, causing Wasatch to call timeout with the Hawks leading, 12-4.Bailey Kendall put a solo block after the time-out, but with some errors on the Hawks part and four straight Wasatch points, Coach Stewart called time-out to get her team back on track.
Earl came out of the huddle with back to back kills to ignite the Hawks once again and Bradley ended the game with an ace serve to give the Hawks the win, 25-14, Ison with 13 kills and Bradley with nine led the Hawks in the victory.
