MT. PLEASANT-- Sandra Bigler, Mt. Pleasant City Council member, was voted in as the Interim Mayor for Mt. Pleasant during the recently held city council meeting.

Bigler replaces Chesley Christensen, who passed away unexpectedly on Memorial Day. Bigler will remain in office until the elections in November.

"I'll do my best," said Bigler, "and I have all these good people behind me."

Bigler has served on the city council for several years and is more than qualified to be Mayor. She has had previous experience as the acting mayor when Christensen was absent.

Bigler was accompanied by Chris Larsen and Dan Simons in running for the Interim Mayor position. The three remaining council members, Monte Bona, Michael Hafen, and Colleen Oltrogge, voted between the three participants which resulted in Bigler becoming Mayor.

The voting was put off for the most part of the meeting because Oltrogge was not present and the others were waiting for her to call in her vote. While they were waiting, the meeting continued on as usual with Bigler as the acting mayor.

The council received a requisition from Monk's Monument asking for $4,945 to replace broken headstones, marking graves, and straightening and leveling the headstones in the cemetery. The requisition was approved to give Monk's the money for one year starting on June 30.

According to Bigler, the process of fixing the graves and headstones has already been started, but they needed a little extra help from the city, which the council was willing to give.

"I have a passion for this," said Bigler. "I don't want to give up until it's done."

The Sanpete Humanitarian Counselor appeared before the council. They are looking for some office space in order to have one place to work out of, instead of being spread out over the county.

Monte Bona offered his office space as a temporary place for them until they can find a more suitable place on Main Street. Sanpete Humanitarian will also be looking for space for a shelter for abused women, and starting a Hispanic council for their group.
