Although they aren't quite sure when the last -- and only -- time a "Miss Saratoga Springs" graced the streets of the city, the Saratoga Springs Civic Events Committee wants to bring the pageant back.

AnnElise Harrison, chair, and Darcey Williams, co-chair, of the Saratoga Springs civic events committee told the city council on Tuesday evening that Saratoga Springs is one of the only cities in Utah without a queen.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for young women in our community to earn scholarship money and give representation to our city," Williams said.

She mentioned that city royalty represent the city ribbon cuttings and events in other cities."Eagle Mountain has said it works wonders for their public relations."

"We have researched it with other cities, and it is very doable financially," Williams said. She explained that the pageant could be mostly covered by the Civic Events Committee budget, but they would need the support of the city for some scholarship money as well as help to put a float together for city parades.

"Our parade will not grow without a Miss Saratoga Springs," Williams said."Last year, Eagle Mountain came because they said that because they were our neighbor they would support us no matter what.We sent out invitations to Lehi, Orem, Bluffdale -- all the surrounding communities -- and got no response because we had no royalty to send to them."

Williams and Harrison said that scholarship prizes would include $1,500 for the queen, $1,000 for her first attendant and $500 for her second attendant.A float could cost as much as $10,000 the first year if they weren't able to get a trailer or some other vehicle donated.

"We could even put her in a boat the first year, and put a banner on it that says 'Miss Saratoga Springs,' " Harrison said.

They explained that the scholarships aren't paid until the end of the royalty's reign, so the city wouldn't need to come up with all the money right away.

"We are obviously in the planning stages, but we need the support of the city council," Harrison said.

The council was supportive of the idea.Councilwoman Mia Love said, "One of the things that stuck out to me is the marketing, and how that can help with economic development.Having someone go out and represent Saratoga Springs, we haven't had that before.I think it would be a great tool for us to really market our city."

"Maybe we could send it out in a newsletter and ask for donations for the Saratoga Springs pageant," Love said. She said that even if residents only contributed a few dollars each, it would add up.

"We think there are a lot of businesses that would be willing to help with this," Williams said.

Miss Saratoga Springs would be part of the Miss Utah pageant, and as such, royalty would represent the city in the state pageant.Contestants are required to be 17 to 24 years of age, either enrolled in high school or a graduate enrolled in an accredited university.Workshops would also be held for contestants to get ready for the pageant, and if they won, help them represent the city for the next year.

The city council asked the city administration to put together a proposal for a budget amendment as well as any other requirements. The council will review the proposal and potentially approve it at their next work session in November.
