The Utah County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team rescued two boaters Wednesday morning in the north end of Utah Lake.
Deputy Collin Gordon said 22-year-old Fidel Soriano and 28-year-old Pedro Floizes, both of Salt Lake, were in an 8-foot rowboat with a small engine, which started malfunctioning just after 8 a.m. near the Saratoga Springs marina. The two men attempted to row the boat in, but the weather conditions drove them farther into the lake. An observer on the shore saw them and called 911; the men called a little later.
The search and rescue team, three other deputies, state parks employees and Saratoga Springs emergency personnel responded. The men were pulled out of their boat after just more than an hour on the water.
Gordon said they were lucky that the small boat didn't capsize in the winds.
"They're extremely fortunate today that we didn't have a different outcome," he said.
People who want to go boating should pay attention to the weather and the water conditions and make sure they have the proper equipment, including an adequate boat, before setting out.
