Hiking the Grand Canyon rim to rim is something a lot of people may think about doing, but a group of local women made the trek this month as a kickoff for their new adventure club.
The "No. 1 Ladies' Adventure Agency" is composed of 10 Utah County women, six of whom are from the same neighborhood in Pleasant Grove. They plan to participate in outdoor adventures twice a year. Michelle Rosenvall of Pleasant Grove came up with the idea and borrowed the name -- and revised it -- from the popular book "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" by Alexander McCall Smith.
"We thought it would be fun to plan and organize adventures one to two times a year," said Rosenvall. "We're taking turns choosing and planning."
The group started at the North Rim, wearing matching shirts, and travelled the 25 miles to the South Rim. "We ran about the first 14 miles, then hiked the last," Rosenvall said. It took between nine and 13 hours for all of the women to complete the trek.
"We took the North Kaibab Trail to Phantom Ranch. We rested and ate there for about an hour. Then, from there we took the Bright Angel Trail up the South Rim," Rosenvall said.
According to fellow runner/hiker Annie Clayson, who had not participated in a rim to rim hike before, the conditions were good -- about 20 degrees when they started at the North Rim and 80 degrees at the bottom. "It can get over 100 degrees at the bottom," she said. "It was really pretty and a perfect temperature."
The ladies carried snacks and backpacks full of water. According to Rosenvall, water is available at four locations along the way, but they took a water purifier in case it was needed. Even though it is a ladies' adventure group, some men came along on this trek. "We had five guys drive around to pick us up at the other side," Rosenvall said. Her 13-year-old son, Christian, participated in the hike for the first time as well.
Clayson is in charge of planning the group's next adventure and she said she is already thinking about what to do, possibly something at Zion National Park, she said.
Rosenvall, who had already completed rim to rim hikes six times before, said that everything went well during the adventure. "It is beautiful there. It never gets old," she said.
