EAGLE MOUNTAIN -- Eagle Mountain's mayor on Thursday held on to her job by a slim 33 votes.
Mayor Heather Jackson's lead, already paper-thin after Tuesday's results, narrowed further as provisional votes were counted on Thursday afternoon.
Jackson attributed the victory-by-a-hair to contented residents, and the flu.
If she completes the four-year term, she will be the first mayor in this city to ever do so.
"When I was out knocking on doors, most people would say you are great, of course you are going to win," Jackson said. "I think a lot of people just didn't show up" to vote.
Less than 2,000 of the city's registered 7,500 voters turned out, which Jackson said probably shows that many residents are comfortable with the status quo.
"And with the flu going around, I can't tell you how many people were saying they were too sick," she said.
Her priorities as mayor will continue as they have, including fighting for local road improvements. On Thursday evening, Jackson was on her way to a regional planning meeting where local mayors would consider extending more than $9 million to finish widening State Road 73 from Redwood Road to Ranches Parkway.
"Most people would be out celebrating" after an election victory, she said. "I'm doing what I always do, which is doing what is best for the city."
Jackson's opponent, Regan Bolli, did not immediately return calls for comment. Both candidates raised more than $10,000 each during their campaign.
