PROVO -- A residential school for teenagers with psychiatric problems is putting on a well-known show with a twist.

The twist isn't a plot surprise. Heritage School's production of "Fiddler on the Roof" is unusual because they're not allowed to advertise because of a national Broadway tour of the same production that ended in August.

"It's been kind of difficult to get an audience for our show for these kids to perform," said CEO Glen Zaugg, adding this performance gives the teens a much-needed boost in self-confidence. "You need an audience to give that applause to them so they can really feel that sense of accomplishment."

The school, which houses teens struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, severe anxiety, Asperger's syndrome and numerous other conditions, puts on a show every year. Zaugg said they cycle through "West Side Story," "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and "The Wiz," in addition to "Fiddler on the Roof." Sticking to those shows allows the school to save money on costumes and sets.

But this year, when they got started on production, the contract for "Fiddler" came back with a strict no-advertising policy because a Broadway group was touring the country putting on the show. The run, which was a farewell tour for Chaim Topol, who was the original fiddler, ended a month ago and didn't come closer to Utah than California, but the rules remained the same.

"It was kind of really too late to decide to do another show," Zaugg said.

Heritage School's "Fiddler on the Roof" runs Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the school, 5600 N. Heritage School Drive, in north Provo. Tickets are $8 in advance for regular seats.
