PLEASANT GROVE -- A Brigham Young University student died Friday after a longboarding accident in Pleasant Grove.

Robison "Robi" Sundell, 24, was longboarding in Pleasant Grove when he lost control of his board and fell headfirst Thursday afternoon, said Pleasant Grove police Capt. Michael Smith. Sundell was riding down Grove Creek Drive while his friends were in a car behind him. Witnesses told police Sundell began to fishtail for about 50 yards before losing control and crashing at 1020 E. Grove Creek Drive.

Smith said Sundell's friend called 911 just before 5 p.m. and paramedics immediately airlifted him to University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City.

Keve Bybee, a friend of Sundell, said he was kept on life support until family arrived. He was declared dead Friday evening.

Sundell usually wore a helmet and training parachute when he felt the situation was risky, Bybee said, but he had neither on Thursday. As he traveled down a hill, Sundell's board got what Bybee called the "speed wobbles" and he tried to duck and roll, but the board went the other way.

Some friends were following behind Sundell and were able to help immediately, but Bybee said a doctor reported Sundell was brain dead on impact.

Bybee said Sundell was good at longboarding, and his death was a big shock to all his friends. Sundell loved adventure and rode motorcycles and longboards and went jeeping often. He often joked that he would not have a natural death, but would die doing something he loved, Bybee said.

"He's just a very confident and fearless person," he said.

Sundell loved to longboard with his friends, and Bybee said he would likely want them to continue with the hobby. However, he said it is important to take the proper precautions with any sport.

Bybee said he will remember Sundell as a friend who was always happy, always looking for a good time with other people. He loved to help everyone and fix things, he said.

"One of his favorite things to do in the winter was tow people out who were stuck in the snow," Bybee said.

Bybee said he and his roommates will travel to Las Vegas this week for Sundell's viewing and funeral, which are scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday.

Smith said while youth occasionally longboard down Grove Creek Drive, it is actually illegal in Pleasant Grove. The sport can be especially dangerous because it is difficult to stop a longboard or skateboard if something comes out in front of the board. Sundell's friends estimated he was traveling at 35 miles per hour when he crashed.

"It's a dangerous sport to be involved in," Smith said.
