Officials have identified a man shot and killed by police Tuesday morning as Todd Hainsworth, of Utah County.
Police say Hainsworth, 50, was suicidal and pulled a pistol on sheriff's deputies after ramming a police car and engaging in a short pursuit. Utah County Sheriff's Lt. Darren Gilbert said officials are still investigating the shooting that happened near Utah Lake's Lincoln Beach, and no information has been released about Hainsworth's situation at the time of the incident.
According to court records, Hainsworth does not have a criminal history in Utah.
Hainsworth was reportedly estranged from his wife, and Gilbert said he does not know if the man had any children. At this point, Gilbert said, it is unclear whether Hainsworth injured himself before officers arrived, but he told dispatchers that he had taken pills.
The sequence of events that led to officers shooting Hainsworth is under investigation, but Gilbert said Hainsworth had control of the situation.
"The suspect dictated the actions of the officers," he said.
According to Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff's Office, the man was on the phone with police dispatchers starting around 9:33 a.m. Tuesday. He reportedly told them that he had taken medication and had a handgun with him.
"He apparently had been shooting indiscriminately in and around his truck," Cannon said.
An airplane was sent up to look for the man, who Cannon said could be heard breathing over an open phone line with dispatchers, but was becoming more lethargic.
Gilbert said the man said he had taken pills and threatened to harm any responders who came to the scene. The phone line was open with dispatchers for about one and a half hours while officials tried to locate him using his cell phone signal to narrow down the search area.
"We had a very difficult time in locating the individual," he said.
Approximately six gunshots were heard while the man was on the phone, and eventually dispatchers stopped hearing breathing over the phone. The man's truck was located by the airplane around 11 a.m., and officers soon began to approach the vehicle. As they drew closer to the truck, Gilbert said the man put his vehicle in gear and rammed a police car.
A brief pursuit ensued for about one mile, until the man exited his car and pointed his gun at officers. Gilbert said two deputies then shot the man simultaneously, killing him.
"He was pronounced dead at the scene," Gilbert said.
As per department policy, the two officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, and the incident is being investigated by the Utah County Law Enforcement Officer-Involved Incident Protocol Task Force. The Utah County Attorney's Office will determine whether officers were justified in their actions.
