Marker commemorating first Utah synagogue unveiled in SLC

On Thursday, Congregation Kol Ami of Salt Lake City, Utah's largest Jewish congregation, hosted the public unveiling of a historical marker in Salt Lake City that commemorates the first permanent Jewish house of worship in Utah. The original synagogue no longer exists, so the marker was placed at the historic Peery Hotel, built on the same site in 1910, which itself is listed on the National Historic Register.

The synagogue was constructed in 1883 by the membership of B'Nai Israel on a lot at 100 West and 300 South. It was only used for a few years before being sold in 1889, and eventually torn down to make way for the hotel.

According to a news release from Congregation Kol Ami, the site was identified by the Jewish American Society for Historical Preservation and the Utah State Historical Society.
